Focusing on your breath gives your mind an anchor to help calm uncontrolled thoughts. You can also focus on an external object, such as a candle flame, to achieve the same purpose.
Just as moths are drawn to a flame, so are we. Until the invention of electricity, we used candles to provide warmth, light and security during the night. We have used candles for devotion, rituals and celebrations in our churches, communities and on our home altars. They provide us with a pleasing and easy object for meditation, as well as a soothing and reassuring presence in times of fear and stress.
